Trends come and go. We have trends in the fitness industry that happen on a massive scale, and others that happen only in smaller subcultures. I’ll let you decide which are which, but let’s be in agreement that both have far-reaching effects in the lives of those that participate.

Here are my predictions for the coming trends in the health and fitness industry…

1. More Movement, Less Muscles. Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last decade, you know that this trend is already happening everywhere. We are moving away from the bodybuilding-style exercise regime of the past and back to a movement-based training plan. Naturally, this trend has huge implications that only time will reveal.

2. Less Machines, More Free Weights and Bodyweight Training. Again, this one is already happening all over the world. Gym members are beginning to realize the foolishness of training on machines, and are beginning to adopt more free weight based tools such as dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, clubbells, sandbags, stones, kegs, tractor tires, and partner resistance. Bodyweight training is also gaining quite a bit of popularity due to its practical and affordable nature.

3. Less Stretching, More Mobility. The real problems with static stretching are starting to come out of the woodwork. People are learning that holding a stretch doesn’t help prevent injury, it only elongates (read deforms) the muscular tissues. So, mobility programs are being created, usually called “joint mobility” programs. Most of these are knock-off’s or Franken-type quick-fix programs that were created for profit, rather than helping people with real needs, but at least we’ve gotten the message that static stretching isn’t always a good idea. If you want the original mobility program, check out the Intu-Flow system (this is the one I’ve used with success for years).

4. More Garage Gyms, Less Big Box Gyms. CrossFit is the leader in the garage gym movement. Most major cities have a CrossFit facility, and those that don’t have small garage gyms strewn about the neighborhood’s. You can see people grunting as they lift heavy, blaring real music, and swinging sledge hammers out on the sidewalk while leaving puddles of sweat everywhere. The garage gyms have a hardcore nature that attracts a unique crowd – people who want to get the job done, and who have realized they can’t do it in a traditional gym setting.

5. More Group Training, Less Personal Training. Not only is this more cost-effective for those who hire professional trainers and coaches, it’s much more fun! Exercising in a group is a great way to enjoy an afternoon or get a good start to a weekend. The energy from everyone creates an ideal training and learning environment, where hard work, teamwork, and creativity abound.

6. More Home Training, Less Gym Training. People need practical, do-it-yourself programs when life gets in the way and you can’t make it to the gym (or don’t want to). Going to the gym can be a less-than-enjoyable experience. You inevitably run into a myriad of problems, inconveniences, and annoyances. The cell phone jockey, the sweat flinger, the “forgot deoderant” dude, the kid doing bicep curls in the squat rack, the big guy giving everyone advice they don’t want to hear, the locker room streaker, the repetition screamer, the ravenous personal trainers (I’ve been one, yikes!), the TV’s, the oldies, and the stale, sweaty air.

People need to be able to get the results they want without an expensive gym membership. The more self-sufficient we become, the better. If you want a self-sufficient fitness program that can be done anywhere, I recommend TACFIT: Tactical-Specific Physical Conditioning.

7. More long-term solutions, less quick-fixes. There are a lot of people who have “been around” in the fitness industry for awhile. They’ve witnessed all the tricks, tried all the gimmicks, and were sold fancy gizmo’s advertised on late night television. More and more people are becoming aware of the irrepresible force of quick-fix solutions that saturate the marketplace, and people are getting sick of it. The lifestyle approach to fitness is gaining some popularity because this is how health and fitness was meant to be experienced. Health is not a 12 week program, it’s something we do for the rest of our life – and finally people are starting to realize this and put it into practice.

8. More Active Recovery Included in Training Program. I’ll tell ya, this one really makes me smile. A lot of coaches and trainers are starting to figure out that the exercise programs they create can cause more problems than they help. It’s not completely their fault, of course. You see, we are so utterly DECONDITIONED as a culture that we can’t even do the things that are good for us. Sure, vigorous physical activity is one of the best health-promoting things we can do, BUT only for those who can sustain physical activity without injury.

A large majority of people who begin a new exercise program have to quit in the first several weeks due to injury – this includes people whom hire a personal trainer. That’s the state of the fitness in our culture, folks. We can’t even engage in physical activity without hurting ourselves. We’ve dug our hole pretty deep. Thankfully, we’re climbing out, slowly, one step at a time. One of those steps is having active recovery directly programmed into the training mix. Joint mobility, yoga, and “off days” that are reserved for relaxing and light activity are becoming the norm in some training circles. Personal trainers are now becoming what could be called a “healthy lifestyle coach” by making recommendations of getting more quality sleep, eating better foods, managing stress, and more. I’m all for it!

Have you noticed any changing trends, and do you think we’re heading in the right direction as an industry?

To your health and success,

The omicron cadre graduating class from earlier this year.

In August, I’ll be flying out to Bellingham, WA to learn from and train with some of the best minds in fitness in the world. I’ll be attending my first Circular Strength Training Certification Seminar. This is really exciting for me not only because I’ve wanted to attend a CST event for the past 3 years, but because I’ll finally get to meet many of the people whom have coached and mentored me into the fitness professional that I am today.

I intend to pursue certification so that I can teach others about the value that I have received through the introduction of CST into my own training. The requirements are rigid, both physically and educationally. I’ll have to demonstrate in-depth understanding of the three wings of CST: Joint Mobility, Clubbell Athletics, and Prasara Bodyflow yoga. Not only that, but I’ll need to display my ability to convey these subjects to others as a coach.

There are a few physical tests as well: the Trial By Fire must be completed with 15 lb clubbells in under 30 minutes. I’ll be required to complete 14 rounds of FlowFit level 3 in 14 minutes or less. I’ll also need to demonstrate excellent technique using the Intu-Flow joint mobility program in breathing, movement, and structure.

The requirements are tough, and for good reason. This is not a “pay for your certification” event. This is a chance to absorb an entire coaching system that is specifically crafted for achieving fitness goals with health as the number one priority – a difficult challenge for sure. Even though I’ll need to work hard to prepare for the event, I’m not worried. I’ve been practicing and experiencing CST over the past three years. I see this event as a way of connecting the dots in my training knowledge and philosophy, giving me the “big picture” perspective of CST. This will help me answer all the questions bouncing around my mind, and solidify the idea of how the 3 wings of CST interact with each other in harmony. I’m sure many more questions will follow.

I’ll be chronicling some of my preparation for the event here on the site.

Today’s Training Session – May 29, 2009

Today, I spent about an hour going through the first two levels of the Intu-Flow Longevity System DVD – beginner and intermediate levels. I did this mostly for a refresher on the materials, but also because I’ve been feeling a little tense lately. I always find that going back to the basics is good because it solidifies good movement qualities, including the subtleties that we sometimes gloss over in more advanced or sophisticated training. I always feel GREAT after a thorough mobility session.

I followed my mobility session with 9 rounds of FlowFit in 9 minutes, 3 rounds each of level 1, 2, and 3 – just broke a sweat. A full body vibration drill followed this.

Then, I spent about 10 minutes on some of the BodyFlow exercises, mostly to relieve some tension that I’ve been chasing around in my legs.

Finished with Forest Flow from the Prasara Yoga DVD.

Did I mention I feel great?

To your health and success,

zombie or alien? I think we can rule human out...

I read an article not too long ago that was explaining what a world full of zombies would be like – literally, a Zombie Nation full of brain dead zombies. Not too long after that, I read a short article titled “We Live in a Zoo.” Just today, I read an article explaining us as aliens on our own planet!

These are from three different authors, mind you. Coincidence? I think not. It’s merely an illusion of coincidence. Well, I’ve taken this theme to heart and have come up with my own interpretation of the modern world we live in. Here’s is a glimpse into the zombie nation, the human zoo, and the aliens at home environment…

I think Erwan Le Corre hit’s it on the head when he says,

The “zoo” is a modern, global and growing phenomenon generated by the powerful combination of social conventions, technological environment and commercial pressures. Increasingly disconnected from the natural world and their true nature, zoo humans are suffering physically, mentally and spiritually.

We see this disconnect between the natural world and humanity everyday.

Almost everyone lives an almost completely sedentary life. Most adults would actually struggle to walk a couple of miles. It would be a rarity to find someone that doesn’t feel pain during or after a walk like this – especially the next day. Almost nobody enjoys physical activity – it’s thought of as work instead of play. Being physically active is the exception instead of the norm.

Food is no longer personally grown, gathered, or hunted – it is freely available just a short drive away. The same food is available year round, irregardless of seasons. You can eat whatever you want, whenever you want, as long as you have money you will have a full stomach – likely full of pesticides, fertilizers, other chemicals, and genetically modified nutrients.

Nobody has time to do anything anymore. There isn’t enough time to cook and eat healthy meals, no time to exercise, no time to sleep, and definitely no time for playing and recreation. Vacations are almost non-existent, weekend trips are rare, and daily recreation is usually limited to sitting in front of the TV for hours on end. Oh yeah, and there also isn’t enough time for meditation, prayer, reading, hobbies, or practically anything else that people WANT to be doing. We have drive-thru’s, express lanes, and swipe cards all contributing on our behalf to alleviate our temporal poverty.

Kids play video games and surf the internet for hours on end – after they have sat still for 7 hours in the classroom. The ones who play sports are forced into fulfilling their parents dreams instead of pursuing their own interests. They associate physical activity with work that is brutally difficult. They are bombarded with the message of “it’s a hard world out there, so you better learn no pain, no gain!” School boards are more concerned with raising test scores that PE requirements because the mind is incorrectly thought to be more important than the body.

There is also an extreme disconnect between nature itself. People wear shoes, sunglasses, bug spray, and sunscreen. They would rather have weak feet, weak eyes, and rub poison on their skin than experience nature. Going outside is for tree-huggers, hippies, and other extremists.

Noise is everywhere! Alarm clocks, TV’s, radios, CD players, Ipods, email notifications, cell phones, cars and trucks, airplanes, lawnmowers, cash registers, and barking dogs (please don’t breed dogs that bark all the time!). The media is screaming FEAR, STRESS, and ANXIETY about things that individuals have no control over. In fact, it’s getting harder and harder to find a quiet place anywhere.

Dis-ease is killing millions of people at sky-rocketing rates. Diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and osteoarthritis are widespread afflictions even though they are almost completely preventable along with most other health problems. Doctors are more focused on treating the symptoms of disease after it happens, instead of educating their patients about how to prevent dis-ease.

Modern society is getting more and more distant from its natural heritage every day. There are a lot of issues contributing to this, but I think it all hinges on personal responsibility. Few people act responsibly anymore, and most people only care about themselves. That’s the bottom line, and that’s what is leading to the physical, psychological, and spiritual suffering nationwide and worldwide.

Instead of contributing to the problem, I’m going to try and alter my perception of the world around me and double my efforts to question and defy conventional thought and wisdom.

What do you think – does the world feel like it’s filled with zombies, zoo humans, or aliens – or have I completely fallen off my rocker?

To your health and success,

*The deadline for entering the contest is finished, but you can still take advantage of this generous offer from Adam Waters.

In a few days, the Real Time Physique (RTP) Body Tranformation Challenge will officially begin (May 1st, 2009). This is a completely new body transformation contest that the world has never seen before, and there are two powerful reasons why. First, it’s because no internet-based body transformation challenge has ever given away such an amazing prize package to the winners. Picture in your mind… flying to New York and staying in a 5 star hotel - awakening to lower Manhattan as the eastern sun rises over the Atlantic ocean. You’ll be escorted to a “VIP” high class gym to train with 2 world-famous fitness celebrities. After you’ve had your share of fun, you will finish the day with a Broadway show after a private dinner. Did I mention the $500 cash prize money?

The second reason this body transformation challenge is unique is because there has never been one that is based on accountability. Social support is a major secret to compliance in a fitness program, and that’s exactly what this event capitalizes on. If you have ever tried to transform your body in the past with less-than-satisfying results, then the social support factor that comes from accountability will be the motivational push that makes all the difference this time – helping you to “get out of your own way” and claim the summer body of your dreams.

Here’s the skinny…

Adam Waters, a Fitness Professional from Australia has researched, practiced, and developed this concept of implementing “real-time accountability” into a body transformation system. Adams reputation precedes him as one of the worlds greatest accountability and success coaches, and is one of the worlds most widespread fitness blogger’s on the internet. Adam’s work has been published in Men’s Fitness, USA and Men’s Fitness Australian editions.

An interesting twist is that my friend, Tom Venuto is co-sponsoring the RTP challenge. In the world of changing physiques through diet, nutrition, and body transformations, Tom Venuto is among one of the top experts in the world. He’s not only my go-to expert for everything nutrition, bodybuilding, and killer physique-based training, he’s also someone that I’ve enjoyed personally working with for the last couple of years. Tom is known for his ability to translate research journal jargon into real world practical advice for those of us who don’t have PhD’s. He’s also the author of the Internets best selling diet/nutrition program in history called Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle (where I work as the manager) and the founder of the Internets largest fat loss support community, the Burn the Fat: Inner Circle (where I work as a contributor and forum moderator).

I can’t think of anyone more qualified than these two to be heading up a Real Time Physique Body Tranformation Challenge.

After announcing the fitness challenge last week, Tom and Adam have released the transformation challenge trailer (movie)…

Watch the trailer below and find out how this accountability-based body transformation challenge could transform your body in the next 84 days…

I’m going to piggy-back the 100 Day Challenge idea that my coach, Scott Sonnon presented on his FlowCoach Blog. The idea is simple: take the next 100 days to achieve your goals and focus on making positive changes in your life each and everyday. Sounds simple enough, right? But how do we ensure that we stick with the plan – and you do have a plan, don’t you?

Two words: social support. If you can find a way to make yourself accountable, then you will be much more likely to succeed (video about accountability here). Scott says that 85% of successful people have some form of accountability in place to ensure success, so make sure that you don’t skip this critical step.

This blog will form as one aspect of my accountability, but I have some people that will keep tabs on me day to day. I plan on applying this 100 day challenge to many areas of my life:

1) physical goals
2) nutrition goals
3) business and work-related goals
4) educational goals
5) spiritual goals

I will use this blog to chronicle my progress towards my physical and athletic goals as best as possible by providing updates via my training journal. I’d love for you to join me, so that we can work together to make positive changes in our lives one day at a time. Here are the details and my instructions…

The 100 Day Challenge

Start Date: April 10, 2009
End Date: July 18, 2009

If you want to participate, then you need to write a list of goals down and some action steps to achieve them. Here is the process that I recommend:

1. Write specific goals that are measurable and realistic to achieve in the 100 day timeline. You should have an ultimate goal that you want to achieve at the end of the 100 days, and some mini-goals to help you get there. WRITE THEM DOWN – don’t just think of them!!!

My physical goals…

Prepare for the CST Certification Seminar in August, which includes completion of a clubbell Trial By Fire in under 30 minutes, Flowfit Level 3 for 14 rounds in 14 minutes, mastery of all basic ranges of motion from Intu-Flow, and mastery of the five A-series Flows from Prasara Yoga.

Mini-goals that I need to focus on:
100 continuous clubbell swipes with double 15 lb clubbells
Spider Monkey Prasara Yoga Flow
Tumbleweed Prasara Yoga Flow
Flock of Pigeons Prasara Yoga Flow
Joint Mobility of the thoracic spine
Progressive FlowFit conditioning and practice (establish a starting point)

2. Make sure that your goals are not conflicting with one another – they should all work together. If you chase two rabbits, you will catch neither of them.

3. Ask yourself why you want to achieve these goals. Make it personal, and get to the very roots of why you really care. Establishing these emotional reasons will help ignite the fire that will keep you going. If there’s no purpose, you won’t achieve much – even in 100 days. Again, write these down!

4. Believe that you will achieve your goals. You need determination and faith in yourself that you CAN DO IT. A good exercise would be to write your goals down as affirmations – affirming yourself that you will reach your goals and enjoy the “fruits of your labor.” Rewiring your subconscious mind for success will greatly enhance your results.

Some of my affirmations:

- I am so happy and thankful now that I am a certified CST Instructor.
- I feel strong because I am the strongest I’ve ever been now that I can complete the clubbell trial by fire in record time, and I even do yoga!
- My strength is only dominated by my ability to flow from activity to activity.
- I will set some world records using the foundation of training I’m building today.

5. Write down your daily action steps that will help you reach your mini-goals and goals. If you need a day-to-day game plan for changing your habits and working towards your goals all the time, then check out this blogpost “Have the Perfect Day, The Best Day of Your Life”

Some of my daily action steps:

- wake up at 6:00am to get a jump start on my day and begin it with my daily personal practice – walking dog and full body joint mobility.
- practice FlowFit 3 times weekly at various exertion levels.
- practice clubbell training minimum of 2-3 times weekly, progressing upon each former session in preparation for the Trial by Fire.
- always finish my strength training sessions with prasara yoga practice as compensation for my rigorous training.

There it is, a 5-Step process for pursuing your goals starting today. The official start date of The 100 Day Challenge is this Friday, and I will be 100% on board with my action plans by then. I welcome your participation, and would love to hear your feedback about the process and your results here on my blog. Of course, you don’t have to start at the same time we do, the important thing is that you commit to positive change and take action on it RIGHT NOW, while it’s at the forefront of your mind.

To your health and success,

P.S. If you want a guaranteed program for achieving your specific goals in exactly 100 days, then I highly recommend Dax Moy’s The Magic 100 Program. If you use this program and fail, you’re hopeless! There’s no way you could NOT succeed:

It’s not strength training related, per se, but laughter definitely has some links to improving health. And since it’s Friday, I thought I would share about a recent article I read on cbsnews.com

Steve Wilson, MA., CSP, a psychologist and laugh therapist says, “I believe that if people can get more laughter in their lives, they are a lot better off. They might be healthier too.”

Wilson even says that the physiological effects from laughter may be synonymous with some types of exercise. No doubt, laughing hard does burn calories as muscles contract and stretch quickly and repeatedly. I can think of several times after a “heavy laughing session” when my abs were actually sore!

So, what does laughter do for us?

Laughter has shown evidence of increasing blood flow (duh! in case no one else has noticed the veins on my forehead – tell us something we don’t know!)

It increases our immune response, effectively creating more anti-bodies to fight infection and bacteria.

It can lower our blood sugar levels (not a bad way to prevent diabetes).

It helps us sleep better.

While the article got quite in-depth about the intricacies of laughter and it’s impact on health, I prefer to keep things simple. I like the closing line from Provine… “Obviously, I’m not anti-laughter,” says Provine. “I’m just saying that if we enjoy laughing, isn’t that reason enough to laugh? Do you really need a prescription?”

That’s all I need to hear – so here are two videos that have given me and my family a good laugh. Both are “g” rated:

Laughing Baby

Funny Laugh – this one had family rolling on the floor

Your Question of the Day is: have you stopped laughing yet?

Have an awesome weekend!

To your health and success,

From Tom Venuto

Via (Avery Books/Penguin Group)

Re: pre-release announcement

New Hardcover Book By Tom Venuto Reveals the 5 Principles for Burning Fat, Building Lean Muscles, Ending Emotional Eating and Maintaining Your Perfect Weight.

By now, we all know that we gain fat when we take in more calories than we burn. But we’re not always rational creatures when it comes to food and exercise. Recognizing the emotional and psychological factors that sabotage success, Tom Venuto’s new Book, The Body Fat Solution (Avery/Penguin Group) hones in on the real causes of body-fat and provides a sound plan to take back control of our bodies and end emotional eating for good.

In The Body Fat Solution, Venuto outlines the five principles that will retrain your mind and body for automatic success. Determined to help you keep the fat off for good, Tom shows you how to:

- End emotional eating and stop diet self sabotage

- change your vision through manageable goals for indomitable confidence

- eat healthy, delicious food almost unconsciously and shed the pounds effortlessly

- reshape your body through lean muscle training for a strong core and toned frame

- invite a supportive social network of friends, family, and mentors to help you achieve your dream for life

Venuto reminds us that calories do count! But The Body Fat Solution is neither super low carb nor super low fat, and he steers clear of demonizing entire food groups. Instead, Venuto helps you personalize an eating plan that takes into account your unique metabolism and calorie needs. He then presents illustrated workout programs to maximize the success of the diet plan that are fast and efficient.

Most important, he helps you plan and organize your life so that you can fully implement your new goals and monitor your progress, and finally maintain your perfect weight for life.

Tapping into his years of training expertise and personal experience, Venuto helps readers change their relationship with food, empowers them to take charge of their lives, and delivers a program that promises dramatic and permanent results.

Would you like to know my exact system for ensuring I make consistent and unlimited gains in strength and fitness? It’s pretty simple, but definitely different from the norm. The term “unconventional” strikes a cord when I think about my approach to training programs versus the many others out there. While my methods may be outlandish in today’s age, I base all of my training on timeless principles that have been proven to work again and again.

Here is a video about the difference between practice and training which can be applied to every physical skill.

Practice vs Training by John Sifferman

So, let’s go over the process of transitioning from practice into training.

You must start all new movement training off from the premise of improving technique (form). Focus on maximizing your efficiency, and moving with as little effort as possible. At the same time, you must ensure that you are not moving in a way that causes you pain. A little bit of discomfort is acceptable, but moving into pain is dangerous and not recommended. Once you can maintain very good technique without any significant discomfort (pain), then you can increase your effort in that particular exercise.

This is when you may transition out of practicing a skill, and begin training with the new skill you have acquired. I guarantee that you will be pleasantly surprised with the training benefits you receive from practicing skill instead of training skill.

Final Words

I have been taught and will continue to teach that strength is a skill before it is an attribute. Sure, we have “tests” that measure one man’s strength to the next. Who can bench press more? Who can squat more? While these tests fulfill their purpose, they fail to quantify whether strength can be applied across a wide range of activities. Strength is a quite broad concept, certainly not limited to how much raw weight one can lift.

If you put two athletes who both have identical strength test results on the field or in the ring (let’s say they both squat and deadlift the same exact amount of weight), how do you determine who is the stronger athlete? I say the simple answer is performance. We can break down traits of movement quality and determine who moves with more efficiency and is effective in their movement, but this is hard to quantify and subjective in nature.

In every activity in real life, strength is just a part of a larger whole – the entire person, the entire athlete. The more we can do to take a global perspective on practice and training, the better we will function in daily life and physical activity.

Your Question of the Day: What skills have you been training lately, and do you think it would help to take a step back and start practicing?

To your health and success,
